The Portland Japanese Garden recently underwent a major expansion to their facilities. Three buildings were added including a “Village House” with a lecture/workshop space, plus display and library space, a Cafe and a Garden maintenance headquarters. Takumi Company was asked to provide interior woodwork in the form of two story screens in the Village House and wide panel ceilings in the Cafe. The wood used is all high grade Port Orford Cedar. The new buildings designed by Kengo Kuma associates are of very modern style, setting a counterpoint to the garden itself. Utilizing traditional woodworking techniques wherever possible in shaping these modern style fixtures allowed us to produce uniquely refined elements enhancing these creative designs.
